Derek Groff
Derek’s love for wine began with a little help from his family. His grandfather’s venture into home winemaking in Ohio using table grapes grown in the backyard and sweet n’ low is the stuff of family legend. Fortunately, being raised in San Luis Obispo’s Edna Valley helped spark an interest in more traditional winemaking techniques. His father’s annual trips up to Napa instilled a desire to learn as much as possible about this fascinating and rewarding slice of life and more importantly, to continually exercise his right to drink great wine. It is in Napa Valley where Derek discovered the underrated beauty of Charbono and the concept for Three Rights Left was born. Derek graduated from UC Santa Cruz and has since spent time in investment banking, corporate development and M&A. He currently works at Frank, Rimerman Consulting performing wine research, fundamental valuation and consulting for the wine and technology industries. He lives in Napa with his beautiful wife and continues to broaden his knowledge base by taking additional enology and viticulture courses at UC Davis, Napa Valley College and the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (currently Level 2 Certified).
Joe Orlando
Joe comes to Three Rights Left from the East Coast where growing up, he was exposed to a number of different varietals including Red and White table wine and in the words of Billy Joel, “perhaps a bottle of Rose instead.” Actually, Joe’s winemaking aspirations were implanted by his grandfather who migrated from Italy and made his own wine in his basement. The wine press on our label is very similar to the hardware Joe’s grandfather used to press grapes, which, given the Italian origins of the varietal, may actually have been Charbono grapes. That press found its way into his childhood home as an antique and constant reminder for his dad of his father’s winemaking dreams. After college at St. Lawrence and graduate school at Georgetown, Joe moved out to California with his future wife and moved up to Sonoma in 2003. As for other entrepreneurial endeavors, he helped start Wonder Dog Lids, a baseball cap company that helped define the retro logo hats on college campuses, and is a self-published author of “Christmas in New Jersey”. He currently lives in Sonoma with his wife, twin boys and his dog. Joe works with Frank, Rimerman Consulting out of the St. Helena office and does fundamental valuation work for wineries and technology companies.
